To rank in ChatGPT, make sure OpenAI’s search crawler (OAI-SearchBot) can reach your site, that your pages are findable in search indexes, and that your website clearly answers the questions customers ask. Then earn mentions on the third-party pages ChatGPT tends to cite, and test real prompts regularly to see what changes.

One honest caveat first: “rank” is a loose word here. ChatGPT has no fixed results page, and answers change with wording, location, time and personalisation. What you can do is improve the odds that ChatGPT finds, understands and recommends your business.

What does “ranking” in ChatGPT actually mean?

When someone asks ChatGPT a question with web search on, it retrieves pages from the web, reads them, and writes an answer that often names businesses and cites sources. There is no position one to win. Instead, you want three outcomes:

  • Being mentioned when someone asks for a recommendation in your category.
  • Being described correctly when someone asks about you by name.
  • Being cited, so your own pages are among the sources linked under the answer.

No AI company publishes its ranking formula, so treat ChatGPT SEO as a set of good habits that make your business easy to find and easy to trust, rather than a trick.

Can OpenAI’s crawlers reach your site?

This is the first thing to check, because nothing else matters if ChatGPT search cannot read your pages. OpenAI uses separate crawlers for separate jobs:

Crawler What it does Block it?
OAI-SearchBot Surfaces sites in ChatGPT search results Blocking it can keep you out of ChatGPT search answers
GPTBot Collects content for model training Optional; blocking it does not remove you from search answers
ChatGPT-User Visits pages when a user asks ChatGPT to OpenAI says robots.txt may not apply to it

Open your robots.txt file and look for rules that block OAI-SearchBot or that block all bots with a wildcard. Also check your firewall, CDN or security plugin, because some block unfamiliar bots by default. OpenAI documents its crawlers at platform.openai.com/docs/bots. For a step-by-step setup, see our guide to allowing AI crawlers in robots.txt, or run the free AI Crawler Checker.

Are your pages in the search indexes AI engines rely on?

ChatGPT search retrieves pages from the web, and OpenAI does not publish every source it uses to find them. The practical takeaway: pages that are hard to find in search are hard for any AI engine to retrieve.

  • Submit your sitemap in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
  • Check that important pages are indexed and not marked noindex by mistake.
  • Make sure key content is in the HTML, not hidden behind logins, heavy scripts or images of text.
  • Fix broken links and redirect chains to your main service pages.

Is your business a clear, consistent entity?

ChatGPT has to work out that the “Bright Smile Dental” on your website, on a directory and in a news article is the same business. Ambiguity makes it less likely to recommend you with confidence.

  • Use the same business name, address and phone number everywhere: your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and directories.
  • Write one plain sentence that says what you do and where, such as “a family dental clinic in Dubai Marina”, and use it consistently.
  • Add Organization or LocalBusiness schema with sameAs links to your official profiles. Keep the markup matching what is visible on the page.
  • Have a solid About page with your founding year, founders, services and locations.

Do your pages answer the questions people ask ChatGPT?

People ask ChatGPT full questions: “Which accounting firm in London is good for freelancers?” or “How much does a website redesign cost in Sydney?” Pages that answer those questions directly are easier to quote.

  • Lead with the answer. Put a clear two-sentence answer at the top, then the detail.
  • Use question-style headings that match how customers phrase things.
  • Be specific. Name your services, areas served, who you help, typical price ranges if you can share them, and what makes you different.
  • Add a short FAQ to service pages, written in plain language.
  • Show who is behind it. Author names, credentials and real contact details help both readers and machines trust the page.

Why do third-party mentions matter so much?

When ChatGPT answers “best X in Y” questions, it often cites pages that are not yours: directories, review sites, “best of” lists, news articles and community threads. If your competitors appear on those pages and you do not, they are more likely to be named.

  1. Ask ChatGPT your target questions and note which pages it cites.
  2. Check whether each cited page mentions you.
  3. Where it does not, look for a fair way in: claim a directory listing, pitch a list author with real information, contribute useful answers in communities, or earn coverage with something newsworthy.

Avoid fake reviews and paid spam. Beyond the ethics, low-quality mentions rarely end up on the pages AI engines trust. Our guide to citation sources, profiles and directories lists where to start.

For questions like “best plumber in Austin” or “good physiotherapist in Lahore”, local signals carry extra weight:

  • A complete Google Business Profile, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect listing with matching NAP details.
  • A dedicated page for each city or area you serve, with real local information rather than swapped place names.
  • address, areaServed, telephone and openingHours in your LocalBusiness schema.
  • Genuine reviews on the platforms your customers already use.

More detail is in local AI visibility for “best service in city” questions.

How should you test prompts?

Testing a single question once tells you very little, because answers vary. A better approach:

  1. Write 10 to 30 questions real customers ask, mixing recommendation questions (“best…in…”), comparison questions and questions about you by name.
  2. Ask each one more than once, and note whether you are mentioned, in what order, and which sources are cited.
  3. Repeat on a regular schedule so you can see trends rather than one-off results.

Keep in mind that answers from the API can differ from the consumer ChatGPT app, and results differ by location. Look for patterns, not single answers.

How do you measure progress?

Track a small set of numbers over time:

  • Mention rate: the share of answers to your questions that name you.
  • Citation presence: how often your own pages appear as sources.
  • Accuracy: whether ChatGPT gets your phone, website and services right.
  • Referral traffic: visits from chatgpt.com in your analytics, where it is recorded.

How Onxeera helps

Onxeera’s Prompt Research asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude your customers’ questions through their official APIs with web search on, then stores the answers, the brands mentioned, their order and the cited sources. It shows gaps where a competitor is named and you are not. The AI Visibility Fixer scans your live site for crawler access, schema, entity and local issues, generates fixes, and lets you re-test to verify them. There is a free plan to start.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?

OpenAI does not offer a way to buy placement in ChatGPT's organic search answers. Any service promising guaranteed ChatGPT rankings should be treated with caution. What you can do is make your site accessible, clear and well referenced, then measure whether your mention rate improves over time.

Should I block GPTBot to protect my content?

That is a business choice. GPTBot collects content for training, and blocking it does not remove you from ChatGPT search answers. OAI-SearchBot is the crawler that surfaces sites in ChatGPT search, so if you want to be recommended, make sure that one stays allowed.

How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT?

There is no fixed timeline. Technical fixes like unblocking OAI-SearchBot can matter once your pages are recrawled, while third-party mentions and reputation build more slowly. Test the same prompts on a regular schedule so you can see real trends instead of guessing.

Why does ChatGPT give different answers to the same question?

Answers vary with exact wording, the user's location, timing and personalisation, and ChatGPT may retrieve different pages each time. That is why a single test proves little. Ask each question several times and track the pattern across many answers.
